Download

Three ways to take it with you.

Pick a film, an episode or a whole season, then how you want it on your device.

Download Original

The file exactly as it sits on your Plex server. Same container, same quality, every audio and subtitle track inside it.

Download Transcoded

Plex makes a smaller copy for you. Choose the audio track, one subtitle and the quality, and see the size before it starts.

Download & Transcode

The original comes down, then Portage converts it on your device for the screen you'll watch on. Your server doesn't do the work.

In the Files app

On iPhone and iPad, downloads are under On My iPhone → Portage. On the Mac they go to a folder you pick. They open in any player.

Keeps going

Downloads carry on in the background and resume after interruptions, a whole season at a time.

Your Plex account, every server on it.

Pick Add a Plex account… and sign in with Plex. Portage lists the servers your account can reach: yours, and the ones friends share with you.

  • Continue Watching and search across all of them
  • Where you stop is saved on the server, so Plex on your TV carries on from there
  • Emby and Jellyfin servers fit in the same library

Stream

Direct play, full quality.

Portage asks Plex for the original file whenever your device can play it, so the server has nothing to transcode. When it can't, Plex transcodes and you pick the size before it starts.

  • Every audio and subtitle track, switchable while it plays
  • Picture in Picture, and pinch to fill the screen
  • Your downloads searchable in Spotlight

Cast

Cast Plex to any screen.

Chromecast and Google TV, DLNA TVs, AirPlay, and any web browser. Your phone stays the remote.

  • Casts the original file when the TV can play it, even an MKV
  • Pause, seek and switch audio or subtitles from your phone
  • Any browser works, even your car's: open tv.rikard.dev and type the code it shows

Questions

Where do Plex downloads go?

On iPhone and iPad, the Files app under On My iPhone → Portage. On the Mac, the folder you pick the first time you download. They're ordinary video files that open in any player.

Is Portage the official Plex app?

No. Portage works with your Plex server, but Plex doesn't make or endorse it. It signs in with your Plex account and connects to your servers like other Plex clients do.

What do I need?

A Plex account with access to a server, and an iPhone or iPad on iOS 26 or a Mac on macOS 12 or later. Portage has no ads.
