Portage Support

Portage is a player and downloader for your own media server — Plex, Emby or Jellyfin — and for video files in any folder, on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Which servers work?

Any Plex, Emby or Jellyfin server you already have access to. Add a Plex account, an Emby Connect account, or an Emby or Jellyfin server by address. Portage has no account of its own and hosts no content.

No server at all? Add a folder of video files and it appears as a library: browse, play, switch tracks and cast from it like any other source.

Where do downloads go?

iPhone and iPad: the Files app, under On My iPhone → Portage.
Mac: Movies → Portage in your home folder.

Casting

Chromecast and Google TV are found automatically on your network.
DLNA TVs and renderers are found automatically on the Mac. On iPhone and iPad, add them by IP address from the cast menu.
Web browsers: open tv.rikard.dev on the screen you want to watch on; it shows a pairing code. Choose Web browser from the cast menu in the app and enter that code, or scan the QR. On the same network you can also open the local address the app displays.
AirPlay is in the same menu.

A file won't play or cast

Some TVs and browsers can't decode every format. Portage offers to convert such files on the device: pick a preset for the device you're aiming at, or choose the codec and tracks yourself. The conversion runs in the background, checkpoints as it goes, and casts when it's ready.

Changing audio or subtitles while casting

Use the track menus in the player on your phone or Mac. On Chromecast, tracks inside the file switch without restarting playback. If a switch isn't possible on the current connection, Portage says why rather than silently changing how the film is being sent.
